DESCRIPTION The Department of Surgery is one of the largest departments in the School of Medicine and is comprised of 102 full-time faculty members, 220 voluntary faculty members, 20 physicians employed on MSP agreements, 25 doctors employed by the VA or other facilities, 77 accredited and 13 non-accredited trainees and 100 career staff. The Ross Lab at UCSD is looking to recruit an outstanding data scientist with an interest in building precision health tools to enable next-generation healthcare delivery. This position provides the opportunity to work with clinicians and perform a deep dive into the clinical area of cardiovascular medicine, surgery, and predictive analytics using imaging data. Our lab is exploring ways to extract important clinical features and identify new features that can improve patient phenotyping and outcome prediction. We use imaging data that is generally underutilized in current computer vision applications. This position provides the unique opportunity to collaborate across institutions, build first-of-its-kind data sources, and understand the translational impact through collaboration with clinicians. The research scientist will help build and curate medical image data sets and apply state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms towards the development of models to detect and/or predict cardiovascular conditions and outcomes. The scientist will also hold develop and/or utilize algorithms to develop multi-modal models that incorporate data from different domains (e.g. clinical text, vital signs, etc) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Six (6) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus two (2) years of related experience/training. Working knowledge of bioinformatics methods and data structures. Working knowledge of applications programming and web development. Strong coding skills with examples of work that is publicly available or can be provided upon request. Working knowledge of databases. Working project management skills. Working knowledge of modern biology and applicable field of research. Interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Writing/publishing peer-reviewed work and presenting work-in-progress locally and nationally. Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner. The applicant should be comfortable with data management, cleaning, statistical analyses, and overseeing regulatory compliance for data utilization. Self-motivated, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate problem-solving skills. Working knowledge of application and data security concepts. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Master’s degree or PhD in a data science related field (e.g. biomedical informatics, computer science, computational biology or statistics) with experience in using computer vision algorithms and/or multi-modal data modeling. Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $74,300 – $134,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $35.58 – $64.42 Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
