Internet Archive is seeking a Head of Product for its Archiving & Data Services group. Internet Archive (IA) is a non-profit digital library, top 200 website at archive.org, and archive of over 100PB of digital information running in multiple self-owned and operated data centers. We also provide technology services to thousands of libraries and mission-aligned organizations worldwide, working collaboratively to advance our shared goal of “Universal Access to All Knowledge.” The Head of Product role will work to help grow and expand the suite of products provided by the Archiving & Data Services group while working in concert with a global set of partner institutions using our products to support their work. The Archiving & Data Services group is a distributed, all-remote team of 28+ engineering, product, program, and operations staff that provides custom and SaaS products for web archiving, digital preservation, data, and access services, both via subscription, membership, and contracted products and services. The group also runs various community programs, grant-funded strategic initiatives, and other types of partnerships-driven work supporting libraries, heritage organizations, scholarship, and perpetual access to information. The role will lead and own product management of both mature and early-stage products and work closely with engineering, product/program, and operations staff on product development, growth, and delivery. This is a hands-on role, directly owning all aspects of the product lifecycle including product origination, development, testing, release, expansion, community cultivation, adoption, and outreach. The role will also coordinate this work through management of staff and through close collaboration with other managers, staff, and engineering teams. Preliminary duties of the role will primarily focus on leading product development of two product areas, Archive-It, our web archiving service and Vault, our digital preservation service, collectively used by over 1,000 libraries and other heritage, higher ed, government, and non-profits around the world. The role will also liaise and contribute to other products and programs within the department and possibly across Internet Archive. Other responsibilities include contributing to grant-funded initiatives, working with department staff on technical and strategic planning, R&D, partnership and business development, and making data-driven decisions for continuous growth and improvement of our products. Reporting to the department Director, the Head of Product will help build values-aligned products for a global coalition of institutions providing open access to digital information. Key Responsibilities: Lead the overall product development and management of early-stage and mature digital products used by an international community of libraries, cultural heritage, government, educational, open knowledge, and social good organizations for collecting, preserving, and providing access to born-digital information. Work with the Director and a diverse and distributed team of other managers and staff supporting and building digital products, including directly contributing to design, technical product management, testing, development, releases, operations, growth, and community building. Potentially directly manage staff supporting current products and assist and work closely with teams on product improvements, operations, and communications. Conduct user analysis, discovery, and product planning and work directly with user communities to ensure the value, efficacy, and impact of our products. Assist in department-level strategic planning, business development, grants, and partnership building. Represent Internet Archive and our products in the affiliated professional communities, including travel for meetings, conferences, presentations, and outreach.

Qualification and Skills:

At least 3-5 years of demonstrated product or program management experience working directly on technology services for institutional users. Proven experience working with and potentially managing remote-first teams, including working directly with engineering and program staff at all levels of seniority. Experience in creating product roadmaps, designs, functional requirements, knowledge centers, and adoption strategies, and ensuring the accomplishment of both internally and externally mandated outcomes and deliverables. Experience with open-source technology product management and knowledge of digital libraries/archives, scholarly communications, data management, or open knowledge services, concepts, and practices is preferred. Must be a creative, entrepreneurial, self-starter, with the demonstrated ability to succeed in a deadline-driven and “finished to completion” environment while successfully juggling many projects simultaneously. Flexibility, self-reliance, a sense of humor, a creative approach to problem-solving, and being energized by ambiguity, possibilities, and problem-solving are valuable qualities. Candidates should be enthusiastic about working in an outcome and impact oriented team and motivated by Internet Archive’s broader mission of “Universal Access to All Knowledge.” Candidates must have strong written and oral communication skills, comfort with presenting, and experience working directly with user communities and stakeholders. The role requires travel to both in-person team staff meetings and national and international events and meetings (estimated 15-20%).

This is a remote-first position working in a distributed team. Candidates will need to have significant time overlap with North America (and largely Pacific Time) based colleagues. Compensation and title will be commensurate with experience and the role is open to candidates of varying seniority with a general salary range of $120,000 to $140,000, depending on location.
