**Schedule: Remote; 4 days a week Monday through Friday, 10 hour shifts or 5 days a week, 8 hour shifts. No Weekends!**

Oncology Data Specialist Certified (ODS-C) or going to school to become an ODS.

Day to Day: If they are an ODS-C then they will be abstracting. If they are not ODS-C They will be doing case-finding which consists of follow-up and disease Index. They will need to attend weekly tumor boards and quarterly cancer committees along with monthly team meetings.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position coordinates the Oncology Data Registry and oncology data management program in accordance with established standards, policies, and regulations related to cancer surveillance and hospital cancer programs. Maintains all aspects of the Oncology Data Registry (Cancer Registry) according to state law, the Commission on Cancer (COC), all regulatory standards and reporting guidelines. Using the cancer registry data system, identifies, registers, and maintains the record of every hospital cancer patient. Obtains follow up information on all cancer patients. Coordinates the American College of Surgeons survey and the Annual Report for the hospital cancer program.

CORE FUNCTIONS

1. Screens, abstracts, and evaluates cancer patients pertinent information regarding the incidence, diagnosis and treatment of cancer as well as survival statistics of all facility patients having an oncological-related or hematological-related diagnosis. Ensures that all cancer patients are identified through the established case finding procedures including analysis of medical records, pathology reports, radiology reports and laboratory reports.

2. Performs all data collection, coding, and abstracting functions in accordance with the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and the state Cancer Registry guidelines. Maintains audit and quality assurance processes for case findings, abstracting, coding, follow-up and data processing procedures.

3. Manages and/or conducts follow-up surveys and updates demographic information on cancer patients in the registry through contact with physicians, clinics, hospital records, patients, and families. Answers requests for registry data; extracts data from assigned company facility database and generates reports as needed. Maintains confidentiality and security of patient data in accordance with regulatory requirements.

4. Analyses data, prepares and presents reports. Performs statistical data analysis and graphical presentation for registry data studies including data requests for Patient Care Evaluation studies and the Annual Report; provides information and meeting preparation for Cancer Committee and subcommittees, with responsibility for all aspects of Cancer conferences (Tumor Boards) including case selection and preparation of agendas; is responsible for accurate reporting of all required information to the states Central Cancer Registry. Compiles and prepares all required and requested reports, special studies and surveys as required or assigned by the Tumor Board, Cancer Committee, the state Cancer Registry, National Cancer Data Base, or the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.

5. Maintains a current knowledge of cancer treatment, research and Cancer Registry requirements and acts as a knowledge resource to staff. Provides guidance in interpreting the COC Cancer Program Standards and evaluating compliance, Actively participates in the accreditation survey process of the cancer program and the facility. As assigned, conducts in-service educational programs for medical record/cancer registry students, new employees and volunteers.

6. Assists in projects for cancer committee, the system, research projects and community outreach. Coordinates work and projects with state and national cancer registries.

7. Manages or participates in the development and management of the department budget in conjunction with established goals and objectives. Holds responsibility for ensuring that assigned budgetary goals are met on an annual basis.

8. Works independently under limited supervision. This position functions at assigned facility, and holds facility level responsibility for the registrar function and related budget. Internal and external customers are: physicians, tumor board members, cancer committee members, other departments within facility, facility employees, patients, family members, other facilities, cancer data registrars at other facilities, State Cancer Registry, community members.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Requires an Associate degree in Health Information (RHIT or RHIA) or health related field, Including coursework in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, statistical analysis and disease processes or equivalent working knowledge.

Must have Oncology Date Specialist formally known as Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) certification and a demonstrated knowledge and experience in coding, abstracting and/or cancer data management.

Requires the ability to interpret and comprehend information contained within the patients medical record (e.g. terminology, disease process, procedures, etc.), to review pathology reports and medical/health records discharge analysis, demonstrate a working knowledge of International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-0) coding principles, American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) and Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program extent of disease staging principles and Collaborative Staging as created by the Collaborative Staging Task Force of the American Joint Committee on Cancer. Must be familiar with chemotherapeutic agents and other modalities, e.g., radiation used in the treatment of cancer. Requires the ability to abstract cancer data from the patients medical/health record using the above standard setters with regard to abstracting and coding procedures.

Must be able to work effectively with common office computer software, the electronic medical records system and databases, spreadsheet and graphical programs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Registered Health Information Technologist or Registered Health Information Administrator certification (RHIT or RHIA).

One to three years of Cancer Registry or Oncology Data Coordinator related experience. Knowledge of American College of Surgeons Program Standards for an approved cancer program. Knowledge of cancer registry software.

Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
