At Weights & Biases, our mission is to build the best developer tools for AI developers. Weights & Biases is a series C company with $250 million in funding and a rapidly growing user base. Our platform is an essential piece of the daily work for machine learning engineers, from academic research institutions like FAIR and UC Berkeley to massive enterprise teams including iRobot, OpenAI, Toyota Research Institute, Samsung, NVIDIA, Salesforce, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Lyft, and more.
Reporting to an Engineering Manager, the Product Software Engineer will work on the Workspaces team. Thousands of Machine Learning Engineers use workspaces daily to monitor and understand their ML training runs. To learn more about what you’ll be working on, see an example workspace or try our tutorial (the colab notebook lets you try it out with no ML experience necessary to run) – we are proud of how simple the app is to get started using.
The workspaces team focuses on how to enable better analysis of the timeseries data generated by MLEs, and in this full stack but primarily backend role you’ll be working on the data pipeline that feeds this data to the frontend. We use technologies like BigTable and Parquet to allow our users to query their data, enabling them to compare the performance of tens of thousands of metrics across hundreds of thousands of runs with millions of data points.
Responsibilities
- Lead new product initiatives that help our customers (ML engineers) collaborate and share information
- Collaborate with other developers on complex technical and performance challenges
- Find ways to make the developers on the team more productive
- Focus on our end users and listen to customer feedback in order to improve our product, either by working directly with customers, or with our team of customer support personnel, designers and PMs.
Requirements
- Full stack engineer, with heavier backend focus – multiple years of experience building and maintaining backend systems. Experience with time series data or data tools like BigTable or Parquet is a plus but not required.
- 4+ years of strong software engineering fundamentals and knowledge of at least 1 modern programming language (Java, Go, Python, C++, etc)
- 2+ years of experience with modern web technologies such as React, Typescript
- 1+ year of experience building high quality products end to end – technical design, implementation, testing, and launch
- An ability to navigate ambiguity and reach a clear understanding of problems affecting our users
- An ability to build features based on complex requirements stated in user terms, either from users directly, or from our product/customer support organizations
- Interest in the AI/ML space, and a desire to continue to learn
Why join us?
- Top-tier machine learning teams rely on our tools for their daily work at companies including OpenAI, Toyota Research Institute, Lyft, Samsung, and Pandora.
- You’ll never stop learning. This role gives you first-hand experience talking with leading researchers in the field, understanding their problems, and directly shaping the product direction.
- Our experienced founding team has successfully built and sold ML tools in the past at Figure Eight, and their deep knowledge of our industry, empathy for our users, and skillful management is driving W&B to success.
- Customers genuinely benefit from our tool. Here’s a quote from Wojciech Zaremba, Cofounder and Robotics Lead, OpenAI: “W&B allows to scale up insights from a single researcher to the entire team, and from a single machine to hundreds of them.”
